The Maker proactively creates and manages custom instrumentation and data artifacts within their area of expertise or responsibility. Their primary motivation is to provide better monitoring for them and their team.

Pain points

  • Instrumentation requires a deep understanding of the service being instrumented.
  • Artifacts created for one team or service are difficult to reuse elsewhere without significant rework.

Common tasks

  • Creates custom dashboards, monitors, and other observability artifacts for their service or team.
  • Instruments telemetry data, often customized, within their area of responsibility using derived metrics and derived labels.
  • Copies and adapts existing artifacts to fit new services or team needs using collections.

Connected personas

The Maker and the Instrumenter share the instrumentation use case, but differ in scope. The Maker instruments telemetry for a single service or team. The Instrumenter is focused on providing telemetry data for the entire platform, and might provide a framework, policies, or code snippets that the Maker uses in their more narrowly focused implementations.
