The Marshal reactively mitigates current or likely license overages. Their primary motivation is to stay within the overall budget. In their role, The Marshal might suffer from the following pain points:
  • Identifying the root cause of a license overage can be complex, depending on the type of license.
  • Current metrics tooling is primarily focused on storage rather than processing or cardinality.

Common tasks

The Marshal uses Chronosphere Observability Platform to complete the following tasks common to their role, which helps alleviate their pain points:
  • Responds to current license violations or potential violations by reviewing license utilization and the consumption page to identify which partition is driving the overage.
  • Applies quick fixes, such as temporary drop rules, to stop or prevent a metric overage.
  • Monitors budgets that are alerting or actively dropping data, and takes corrective action.

Connected personas

The Marshal is the administrator experience equivalent of the Responder. Both are reactive personas looking for fast mitigation. The Plastic Surgeon is the proactive counterpart to the Marshal. Where the Marshal reacts to violations, the Plastic Surgeon works in advance to prevent them.
