The Plastic Surgeon proactively shapes data consumption to fit the license through data shaping rules and policies. Their primary motivation is to get the most value from the data budget without going over. In their role, The Plastic Surgeon might suffer from the following pain points:
  • Different models and tools exist for different telemetry and license types.
  • Instrumenting telemetry to take advantage of tooling adds complexity.
  • Cost control through centralized rules is a new concept for many organizations.

Common tasks

The Plastic Surgeon uses Chronosphere Observability Platform to complete the following tasks common to their role, which helps alleviate their pain points:
  • Analyzes usage patterns using telemetry usage analysis and the consumption page to identify opportunities to reduce data volume before a violation occurs or in response to budget cuts.
  • Creates and manages metric shaping rules to cut or enhance metric and trace data usage.
  • Creates budgets with drop thresholds and priority policies to proactively control log volume per partition.
  • Shapes data to apply finer-grained control within partitions.

Connected personas

The Plastic Surgeon Works with the Accountant to align data usage with team quotas and partitions. The Accountant monitors the overall budget and creates budgets for each team. The Plastic Surgeon does the work of actually cutting or increasing data usage through shaping rules. The Plastic Surgeon is most similar to the Investigator on the developer side. Both are proactive users that scrutinize system behavior.
